Bellagio. Caesars Palace. The Venetian. Las Vegas is home to some of the most famed casino resorts in the world, and even the swankiest properties on the Strip will give you a comped room -- but only if you wager enough. The lesser quality the hotel, the easier it will be to earn that free night's stay.

Players Club Cards

Sign up for a players club card before gambling in any casino. After you get the card, use it anytime you play a slot machine or table game to build up comp credits. Many of the resorts in Las Vegas are owned by two major corporations, so the comps you earn are linked and can be used in any of the properties they possess. Caesars Entertainment (caesars.com) owns such casinos as Harrah's (harrahslasvegas.com), Rio (riolasvegas.com), Paris Las Vegas (parislasvegas.com), Caesars Palace (caesarspalace.com) and Planet Hollywood (planethollywoodresort.com), while MGM Resorts International (mgmresorts.com) owns about a dozen, including Aria (arialasvegas.com), Bellagio (bellagio.com), The Mirage (mirage.com) and Luxor (luxor.com).

Calculating Comps

With slot machines, comps are often cut and dried. Many casinos will provide you with a chart that shows how many points you must earn to redeem for freebies such as hotel rooms. When playing table games, you must use a formula. If you played $100 a hand for six hours at a blackjack table in which you are dealt about 60 hands per hour, the expected casino win would be $180. You get this figure by multiplying the bet times the number of hands times the number of hours, then multiplying that total by the expected house edge of 0.5 percent. Many casinos will return about 20 percent of your expected loss in comps, or about $35 in this case. The calculations will vary depending on the speed and house edge of each game. Ask any floor supervisor about your comp rate if you have questions.

Researching Room Offers

If you're in a casino, you can inquire with a floor supervisor or the players club desk if you've earned enough comps for a free hotel stay. If you're already staying on site you may be entitled to a refund or reduced rate on your current stay. You can also use the players club number you get when you sign up for a card to check your offers online at the casino or corporation's website. That's Total Rewards (totalrewards.com) for Caesars Entertainment and MLife (mlife.com) for MGM Resorts International.

Freebies in the Future

Provide casinos with your mailing and email addresses and you will likely see room offers pile up in your mailbox and inbox after you return home as they try to entice you to make a return trip. Sometimes they will offer free rooms (depending on your gambling history) and other times they will offer discounts combined with other complimentaries like slot play and two-for-one buffets.
